How Media informs opinion

The media plays an important role in informing us. Today’s media uses various mediums to get their message across, there are the traditional; newspaper, television, radio and then there are the many other mediums that technology affords us; internet, blogs, facebook and twitter to name but a few, the list is long.
I believe in the media, I believe that the role of the media is of great importance to any society. I am one who will never condemn the media, I will never say for instance the media is in the pockets of the drug cartel fro example.
I will however say that the media can in fact mislead society with their headlines. I will however say that there are radio talk show hosts who without proper information mislead society, sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentionally.
Last Friday, during a talk show program on Power 102 one of the host [Christopher Seon] read out a post from a Facebook group that I administer [ TTHaveYourSay]. But that’s a good thing you may say, not really. What he did was read the original post and never bothered to read any of the comments that followed, effectively creating such a situation where listeners to that program would form in their mind a particular conclusion of the writer of that post.
Well, I along with other who comments on the thread had a good laugh after I explain what this talk show host did, because they fully understood what was meant by the post.

Moments before posting this for discussion, Seon and his co-host Clifford Leamond [Spawn] raised the issue of Sasha Mohammed and the fact that the Police claimed that the “DPP advised us not to charge PM's adviser”, that such a threat would have had to be sent on more than one occasion.  I sent a text as usual supporting what they were expressing at the time, in that the thought was that this cannot be right.
After I sent my message and after the hosts discussed the issue, I then composed my post, informed by this discussion and went ahead and posted. The logic being to mimic what what alleged was sent in an email my Ms. Mohammed and to tell members of my group that their action will have consequences. To which the first comment by me was “oh BTW, allyuh cannot do me anything, I only said this once”. The point being, how is it that someone cane send threatening emails to others, but no charges can be made because it was sent ONLY once.
I have no issue with Seon reading my post, because anyone seeing it in isolation would wonder what is going on, but what i do have issues with is his refusal to correct himself once more info is presented. Repeated attempts to get this Seon to read the thread so he could correct his miscommunication failed, his co-host, Spawn, who disrespects people daily on his show, went to to add that I am looking for fame, how he came up with that I could never understand. Maybe this is what the management of the radio station thinks the callers, texters to the different shows are doing, looking for fame. But how could they when they encourage us to call in and text in to share our views?
Freedom of the press comes with responsibility, and whilst my case is in no way an indictment on the media, the fact is that media has been irresponsible when they carry out their duty of informing a society, when things like this is done, listeners leave with a formed opinion about persons and or issues, this has to change. The media must ensure that whatever they put out positively benefits its audience and contribute to the development of a country. Talk show hosts in this country have been allowed to get away with the worst kinds of behaviour leading to the division of a people. No wonder why this place is in such a mess. It has to stop.
